Today is Giving Tuesday, an annual international movement promoting charity and philanthropy, and this year’s campaign coincides with the launch of the SD36 Education Support Endowment, a vital new funding initiative for Surrey and White Rock schools and students.

As of this week, donors may contribute to the new endowment, which invests district donations with the goal of generating enough interest annually to fill long-term funding gaps, providing accessible funding to schools in need while creating legacy impact for donors. For Giving Tuesday, the district has set a donation goal of $20,000 for the endowment to kickstart the accruement of interest for future district needs.

“The Education Support Endowment is more than just a fund – it’s a commitment to our students and their school communities to continually support their needs beyond ministry funding,” said Vanessa Seco, manager of Major Gifts and Endowments for the district. “The endowment ensures the flexibility to address urgent priorities across our schools and the opportunity to invest in a stable, brighter future for every child in Surrey and White Rock.”

The SD36 Education Support Endowment will support initiatives such as:

  • safe, inclusive and engaging playgrounds for all students;
  • food, clothing, hygiene products and other basic needs for students facing economic hardship;
  • technology and digital learning tools to prepare students for academic and professional success;
  • transportation assistance for students in need, including for field trips and extracurricular activities, as well as bus tickets and specialized bus services for students with diverse needs;
  • essential supplies, classroom resources and equipment for students and educators to enhance learning experiences, support academic success and foster creativity;
  • upgrade projects to transform education spaces and outdoor areas to provide dynamic, engaging and functional learning and playing spaces for students;
  • and art supplies, musical instruments and sports equipment to support enriching extracurricular programs that inspire creativity, self expression and teamwork.

Surrey Schools is a registered Canadian Charity with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), and while the district receives operating funding from the provincial government for district operations, many programs, including those that support the needs of vulnerable learners, rely on donations. Initiatives such as provision of food, after-school programs, transit passes, playgrounds, field trips, library books, scholarships, technology and school equipment are supported by the kind donations of individuals and corporations.

Like annual gifts and other charitable donations, contributions to the endowment can be made either generally to the SD36 Education Support Endowment and the district will determine the most urgent need, or donors can designate their donation to spent on a specific program. Endowment contributions above $20 that comply with CRA regulations are also eligible for tax receipts.

“We provide tax receipts to donors for their key contributions towards things like food, clothing and school supplies for students as well as new technology, unique field trips, new library books and accessible playgrounds for schools,” said Seco.

The district’s Advancement Office works with hundreds of committed partners and donors to ensure that diverse and important programs can run and that child and family supports are in place across the district’s school communities.

“To all our amazing donors who have supported us and to those who will support us in the future, thank you for investing in the success and well-being of our students,” said Seco. “Together, we are creating opportunities that will prepare learners to think critically, communicate skillfully, and demonstrate care for generations to come.”

Those interested in donating to schools or the Surrey School District – via the endowment, annual gifts or other charitable donations – may do so by contacting the district’s Advancement Office or by donating online.

This Giving Tuesday, the district wishes to thank its donors for all their contributions, and to encourage others to support district programs.

The district accepts donations online and by email (donations@surreyschools.ca), mail, fax, phone and automatic bank debit (see info box). The district provides tax receipts for cash donations over $20.
