No shortage of events & activities for Surrey youth over spring break
With students out for spring break, Surrey Schools is highlighting events and activities to keep youth engaged and active over the two-week period.
In addition to spring break camps taking place around the city through the City of Surrey and City of White Rock, as well as the district’s own Community Schools Partnership and Safe Schools departments, there are also drop-in sessions available at the city recreation centres and libraries in both Surrey and White Rock.
According to Will Cloy, Youth Engagement & Intervention Events Programmer with the City of Surrey, the city has increased staffing and programming to meet increased demand during the break.
“Our programs and camps have grown over the years, and it’s always been a priority to provide a barrier-free way for kids stay involved with positive outlets when they’re out of school,” he said.
Having previously worked for Surrey Schools as a Safe Schools Liaison, Cloy knows first-hand how important it is to keep youth engaged, especially during periods when they don’t have the structure or routine school provides.
“These break periods can be a really anxious time for kids and so we need to make sure that we’re able to keep them connected to other resources and opportunities,” he said. “The more we can keep them engaged in positive activities, the less likely they are to engage with at-risk behaviours.”
City of Surrey drop-in events are open to any youth with a youth services membership, which can be purchased here, with a discounted rate for the spring break period. Those facing financial barriers can request assistance by contacting youth@surrey.ca or safe-office@surreyschools.ca. Events and drop-in sessions at the Surrey and White Rock libraries are free to attend.
