School Parent Advisory Committees (PACs) in Surrey and White Rock will soon receive a share of more than $1.3 million in community gaming grants from the provincial government to support student learning in schools.

In December, the province announced $11.2 million in grants for more than 1,300 B.C. schools and District Parent Advisory Councils, with $1,379,860 earmarked for 111 school communities in Surrey and White Rock. The grants this year range from a minimum of $2,000 up to $35,000, with Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary receiving the highest amount.

PACs or equivalent groups such as parent support groups may apply for PAC grants once per year, between April 1 and June 30. Grant amounts are awarded at the rate of $20 per student, with a minimum grant of $2,000 for PACs with fewer than 100 students. (For application guidelines and checklists, click here.)

The PAC and DPAC grants are designated to enhance extracurricular opportunities and promote parent and community involvement. The PAC funds support student learning through school events, field trips, equipment for activities and other educational needs.

DPAC grants are intended for such expenses as promotional materials, presenter fees, room rentals and travel for conferences or meetings.
