Several Surrey Schools staff win Community Leader Awards

Four teachers from across the district received honours at the 21st Surrey Now-Leader Community Leader Awards, recognized for their leadership roles in and out of the classroom. A posthumous appreciation award was also presented to the family of a former longtime principal.

Presented at a gala on Nov. 23, the annual Community Leader Awards highlight the unsung heroes of Surrey who give to their communities without seeking recognition. A total of 18 people were honoured in nine categories.

The family of late Tamanawis Secondary principal Kevin De Boice received a special Appreciation Award, honouring his work as a founding member and judge of the Community Leader Awards for the past 20 years. The award was presented by Rick Inrig, a longtime friend and co-founder of the Surrey RCMP Basketball Classic alongside De Boice.

École Salish Secondary French Immersion teacher Nicole Jarvis received the top honour in the Environmental Leader category for her work promoting environmental sustainability with students through clothing swaps, street cleanups and gardening projects. She leads the school’s Environmental Club and has inspired students through collaborations with United Way BC and the Salish Farmer’s Market.

Teacher of the Year went to Rick Kumar of École Panorama Ridge Secondary for his work in fostering creativity among social studies and English students, as well as sponsoring the school’s Debate Club, Model United Nations Club and Anime Club. Kumar has also supported Options Community Services for six years in its homeless shelters branch, raising awareness of the issues impacting vulnerable populations. He was recognized for his engaging lesson plans, socially conscious efforts in the classroom and advocacy for young workers’ rights.

Douglas Elementary teacher Christine Hart received an honourable mention in the Teacher of the Year category, credited for creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for students while always exploring best practices for trauma-informed learning among her teaching colleagues.

Sanjeev Hundal of Hyland Elementary was named Coach of the Year for his ongoing dedication to youth soccer in the community, having served as a volunteer coach for more than 15 years. His passion for seeing students succeed in the classroom is reflected in his coaching style and desire to see athletes excel on the field.
