Today is Giving Tuesday, an annual international movement promoting charity and philanthropy. And this year, Surrey Schools continues to be thankful for the ongoing generosity of the many donors who support district programs throughout Surrey and White Rock.

While Surrey Schools receives government funding and grants for capital projects, other initiatives rely almost entirely on donations. Initiatives such as provision of food, after-school programs, transit passes for students in need, playgrounds, field trips, library books, scholarships, technology and school equipment are largely donor dependent. Surrey Schools is a registered Canadian Charity with the Canada Revenue Agency.

“A lot of people don’t realize that the district is a federally registered charity with a clear mandate to support education,” said Vanessa Seco, manager of Major Gifts and Endowments for the district. “Donations provide an important avenue to enhancing learning and ensuring all students have the best opportunities for success.

“We provide tax receipts to donors for their key contributions towards things like food, clothing and transit passes for students as well as new technology, unique field trips, new library books and accessible playgrounds for schools.”

The district’s Advancement Office works with hundreds of committed partners and donors to ensure the best family services, program enhancements and child supports are in place across the district’s school communities. -

“We encourage donors to target their contributions to purposes that inspire them, or to give a gift for the district to put towards our most critical needs at the time,” said Laura Lukey, manager of Business Development. “We are so thankful to our community of donors who give so much to schools and classrooms that then builds on the exceptional work of our staff there.

“We also celebrate all of those who contribute to ensure basic needs of children and youth are met so that all our students can focus on learning, playing, and envisioning a positive future.”

Those interested in donating to schools or the Surrey School District may do so by contacting the district’s Advancement Office or by donating online.

This Giving Tuesday, the district wishes to thank its donors for all their contributions, and to encourage others to support district programs.

The district accepts donations online and by email (donations@surreyschools.ca), mail, fax, phone and automatic bank debit (see info box). The district provides tax receipts for cash donations over $25.
