Every year, April 28 marks the International Day of Mourning, commemorating workers who have lost their lives to work-related incidents or occupational disease.

In recognition, Surrey and White Rock schools and district buildings will fly their flags at half-mast, in remembrance of workers who have been killed and injured on the job.

In 2022, 181 workers in B.C. lost their lives to workplace injury or disease.

“Today, we remember those who lost their lives at work and reinforce our commitment to ensuring safe workplaces for everyone,” said Laurie Larsen, Chair of the Surrey Board of Education. “We continue to support the health and safety of our students and staff, which remains of utmost priority for the district.”

This year, Day of Mourning BC is hosting ceremonies in the following neighbouring communities on Friday, April 28:

  • Vancouver: Jack Poole Plaza, 1055 Canada Pl. (livestream available at dayofmourning.bc.ca)
  • Delta: Rotary Park, 4500 Clarence Taylor Cr.
  • New Westminster: Westminster Pier Park, 1 Sixth St.
