The presents might be opened from under the tree, but it's still winter break! And with a well-deserved two weeks at home, it’s the perfect time to curl up with a good book.
We’re continuing our Winter Reading series with three recommendations for Grade 4 to 7 students from Simon Cunningham Elementary teacher-librarian Juniper Ridington. Here’s what’s on her list for pre-teens this winter break.
Unstuck by Barbara Dee
Grade 7 student Lyla loves creative writing and is excited for her Language Arts project to write a fantasy story that she’s been planning in her head for ages. But what happens when a serious case of writer’s block means the words won’t come out on the page? Find out if Lyla overcomes the friendship and family drama that’s making her anxious and manages to get “unstuck!”
Olivetti by Allie Millington
Have you ever read a book where the main character is a typewriter? Do you even know what a typewriter is? In this inventive and unique story, Olivetti has been a beloved typewriter in the Brindle family for years, but lately, he’s been neglected and is then sold to a pawn shop. But Olivetti hasn’t forgotten the family he loves and is determined to help them solve the mystery of their mother’s disappearance.
Gamerville by Johnnie Christmas
Max Lightning has finally qualified for Gamerville, a championship for his favourite multiplayer video game. But his parents, concerned about his late nights and video game obsession, choose this time to send him to Camp Refresh where electronics are forbidden.
