Policy 9802 - School Fees

The Surrey Board of Education shall provide instruction free of charge to all students registered in a school’s education program sufficient to meet the general requirements for graduation, and it shall provide free of charge any resource materials necessary to participate in that program. The board may, however, charge fees for optional educational resource materials which come into the possession of the student.
In accordance with the School Act, the Ministry of Education School Board Fees Order and the School (Student Achievement Enabling) Amendment Act, (2007), school fees must only be used for:
a) Materials used for goods that are intended for the student to take home for personal use or as a gift.
b) The purchase of paper, writing tools, calculators, student planners, exercise books, computer diskettes, other school supplies and equipment for a student’s personal use.
c) The rental of a musical instrument for a student’s personal use.
d) Participation in district “specialty” academies; and
e) Participation in trades and apprenticeship programs where students are registered with the Industry Training Authority.
Parents and students should be provided with opportunities to bring appropriate supplies and equipment from home without having their choices of materials unreasonably directed by the school.
