Check & Connect

The Check & Connect Program (C&C Program) is a comprehensive intervention used with K-12 students who are at risk of dropping out and who show warning signs of disengagement with school. The purpose of the program is to foster school completion with academic and social competence.

The program is school-based and often involves existing staff and supports. At the core of the C&C Program is a trusting relationship between the student and a caring, trained mentor who both advocates for and challenges the student to keep education salient. Program referrals are made when students show warning signs of disengaging from school, increased absenteeism, behavioural issues, and/or low grades.

In collaboration with the district, the Research and Evaluation Department collects data from the C&C Program as well as attendance records from MyEd BC to track and measure student outcomes from involvement in the C&C Program. Pre-enrollment absenteeism data and program participation data are compared and analyzed to evaluate the use of the program.

The Research and Evaluation Department’s assessment of the C&C Program in Surrey Schools, is used to inform the district, provide recommendations, and collect evidence on student outcomes. Findings from the department’s program evaluation are used to assist in program planning and the implementation of strategies to best support our Surrey students.
