Surrey Schools recognizes fallen workers on Day of Mourning
April 28 marks the International Day of Mourning, an annual day to remember, honour and commemorate workers who have lost their lives to work-related incidents or occupational disease.
In recognition, Surrey and White Rock schools, as well as district buildings, will fly their flags at half-mast, in remembrance of workers who have been killed or injured on the job.
In 2024, 146 workers in B.C. lost their lives to workplace injury or disease.
“The Day of Mourning serves as a somber remembrance of those who have lost their lives while at work and a solemn reminder of the preciousness of life,” said Gary Tymoschuk, Chair of the Surrey Board of Education. “We remain committed to ensuring safe workplaces for everyone in the district and continue to support the health and safety of our students and staff as a top priority in all of our schools and district offices.”
Today, Day of Mourning ceremonies are being held in the following neighbouring communities:
- Vancouver: Jack Poole Plaza, 1055 Canada Pl. at 10 a.m.
- Delta: Rotary Park, 4500 Clarence Taylor Cr. at 10:45 a.m.
- New Westminster: Westminster Pier Park, 1 Sixth St. at 11 a.m.
