Forty-nine Surrey & White Rock students win 36 awards in Skills Canada BC regional competition
Secondary students from across the Lower Mainland competed in the Skills Canada BC Lower Fraser Valley regionals, testing their abilities at different trades such as cabinetmaking, welding, electronics, web design, video production, photography and more.
Surrey Schools had an outstanding showing at this year’s Skills Canada BC regional competition, with nearly 50 students making the podium in the annual secondary trades contest and securing gold and silver in all 13 categories.
Forty-nine students and teams from 10 schools across the district took home 36 awards in the Lower Fraser Valley regionals, which took place March 6 and 7 at Fraser Heights Secondary and the Cloverdale campus of Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
Fraser Heights students swept the categories for 2D Animation, Graphic Design, Website Design and Mechanical CAD, winning gold, silver and bronze in all four categories and totaling 17 awards with several other victories.

Frank Hurt Secondary took the top spots for Automotive for three awards while Guildford Park Secondary students took home three awards between Carpentry and Architectural CAD, as did Grandview Heights Secondary students in Welding and Cabinetmaking.
Kwantlen Park Secondary took the two top spots in Electronics and Princess Margaret Secondary students took silver and bronze in the Photography category
Elgin Park Secondary’s Mackenzie Fuller finished first in Cabinetmaking, École Salish Secondary’s Jayden Modenese placed second in Welding and Fleetwood Park Secondary’s Jacob Pastor took bronze in Electronics.
In the Jr. Skills part of the regionals, teams from Erma Stephenson Elementary took first, second and third in the Spaghetti Bridge competition.
The 13 gold medal winning students and teams have been invited to participate in the provincial Skills Canada BC competition, taking place Wednesday, April 16, at the TradeX in Abbotsford.
