School’s out for spring break, and with two weeks off, it’s a great time for students to enjoy a little reading with some fun book ideas for younger kids!

We’re starting our Spring Reading series with several recommendations from Katzie Elementary teacher-librarian Chantal Van Santen for kindergarten to Grade 3-level readers. Here’s what’s on her list for younger students this spring break:

Dim Sum Palace by X. Fang

Liddy is so excited to go to the Dim Sum Palace tomorrow with her family that she can't sleep! So when a tempting smell wafts into her bedroom, she has no choice but to follow it... to a real palace where she embarks on a delicious and fantastical adventure ultimately celebrating the joy of food, family, and culture. Inspired by childhood memories of epic dim sum feasts, X.Fang’s Dim Sum Palace beautifully captures the magic of childhood dreams and the rich cultural heritage of dim sum.

No Cats in the Library by Lauren Emmons

Clarisse is a stray cat who loves books but can't understand the words. Determined to explore a magical library, she sneaks in and helps a young girl practice reading aloud. This book celebrates the love of reading and the joy of finding a place to belong.

There Are No Ants in This Book by Rosemary Mosco & Anna Pirolli

There Are No Ants in This Book by Canadian author Rosemary Mosco is a hilarious and educational story that explores the fascinating world of ants. Despite the title, readers are introduced to various types of ants, each with unique traits, as they join a picnic and turn it into a fun and informative adventure. You will laugh out loud as you learn about these tiny creatures.

Once Upon a Sari by Zenia Wadhwani & Avani Dwivedi

Once Upon a Sari is a celebration of family heritage and cultural identity. In this heartwarming story a young girl named Avani explores her mother's collection of saris. As her mother shares the memories and cultural significance behind each sari, Avani learns about her family's history and the rich traditions woven into every fabric.

There are lots of great books to choose from for primary readers this spring! Stay tuned for recommendations for intermediate and secondary students in our Spring Reading series!
