Fraser Heights Firehawks soar to the top of the Ladder in Goodwill Basketball Classic
The Fraser Heights Secondary senior girls burned up the competition in the Ladder Division of this year’s Surrey Fire Fighters Association Goodwill Basketball Classic, defeating the Sullivan Heights Stars 42-29 for the championship.
The 23rd annual dual tournament series – which splits Grade 12 girls teams into the Ladder and Axe divisions – saw the Fraser Heights Firehawks hold a rather dominant lead over their competitors throughout the tournament, winning 30-19 against the Queen Elizabeth Royals, 49-29 against the Frank Hurt Hornets and 45-33 against the Grandview Heights Grizzlies.
While Sullivan Heights put up more points in higher-scoring games against the Khalsa Lions and École Salish Wolves on their ascent to the finals, the Stars fell from the sky as the Firehawks spread their wings to victory. The Guildford Park Sabres wound up in third place, defeating the Grizzlies 62-49.
The Ladder Division featured some exceptionally close games, including the Clayton Heights Riders edging out L.A. Matheson Mustangs 52-48 before coming up one point shy in the quarterfinals against the Grandview Heights Grizzlies, and the Wolves narrowly staying ahead of the Tamanawis Wildcats in their first game, also separated by one point, 50-49.
In the Axe Division, the Holy Cross Regional High School Crusaders lit up the scoreboard start to finish, putting up no less than 73 points per game and ousting the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers 79-70 in the final. The Panthers still had a strong showing, with significant wins over the Wildcats and École Panorama Ridge Thunder, as well as a 29-point lead in semifinals that cut things short for the Pacific Academy Breakers.
The Semiahmoo Totems posted the highest score of both tournaments with 93 points against the Grizzlies and went on to take third place over the Breakers, 60-51.
In addition to accolades on the court, the Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society offers several bursaries in the name of “goodwill” to student athletes who have outstanding volunteer service in their community. To date, the society has awarded more than $90,000.
Congratulations to all of our teams who competed in the Surrey Fire Fighters Association Goodwill Basketball Classic!
