Surrey Students honoured with Vancouver Symphony Orchestra awards

Nineteen Surrey Schools students were recently honoured by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) as part of this year’s Höing Awards scholarships. 

Founded in 2018 by longtime VSO supporters Werner and Helga Höing, the awards were created to recognize up to 20 Surrey students annually who have demonstrated excellence in music, school leadership and community involvement.

The winners are honoured each year during the VSO’s annual spring concert at the Bell Performing Arts Centre. The following students each received $1,000 towards their school’s music department:

  • Earl Valencia – Frank Hurt Secondary
  • Jenna Simmons – Kwantlen Park Secondary
  • Liam Woo – Elgin Park Secondary
  • Harshdeep Johal – Enver Creek Secondary
  • Victoria Parks – Grandview Heights Secondary
  • Oliver Laporte - École Salish Secondary
  • Seyara Weerasekera - Tamanawis Secondary
  • Sophina Nann – Fleetwood Park Secondary
  • Jayden Lui – Guildford Park Secondary
  • Xedrick Fedellaga – Johnston Heights Secondary
  • Arjan Basra – Sullivan Heights Secondary
  • Erin Kim - Semiahmoo Secondary
  • Uday Randhawa – Princess Margaret Secondary
  • Isaac Bradford – Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary
  • Jake Park -North Surrey Secondary
  • Nicky Nguyen – Fraser Heights Secondary
  • Mira Mikhael – Clayton Heights Secondary
  • Amneet Bamra – L.A. Matheson Secondary
  • Cat Henderson – Earl Marriott Secondary

“These awards not only encourage students to take part in music programs and opportunities to further develop their creativity and skills, but they also help keep these essential music programs alive for future generations,” said the district’s arts education helping teacher Tricia Liversidge. “We are so grateful to the Höing family for their generosity.”
