The two-hour event will feature two performances, VOICES in Concert and The Flight of the Hummingbird.

The Surrey show was made possible after the Vancouver Opera was chosen as one of three winners of the Bell Performing Arts Centre Community Program award, an annual program that grants community groups free use of the venue.

A collection of classic and modern opera favourites, VOICES in Concert, will treat audiences to arias and duets from throughout the ages.

The second part of the show will feature The Flight of the Hummingbird, an original opera based on an Indigenous parable that has become well-known in Haida culture. The story follows Dukdukdiya the hummingbird as she works to unite the animals of the forest against a raging fire threatening their home. Paralleling the climate struggles in our own world, the opera sends a powerful message to adults and children alike: that only by working together can we save our planet from climate crisis.

The Vancouver Opera event takes place at 7 p.m. on May 16 at the Bell Performing Arts Centre (6250 144 St.). Tickets for the all-ages event are free and can be reserved online.
