One current Surrey Schools student and one recent graduate are finalists for 2024 B.C. Athlete of the Year awards.
L.A. Matheson Secondary Grade 12 student Yemane Mulugeta is nominated for High School Male Athlete of the Year, while Earl Marriott Secondary graduate Lauren Kim is nominated for Junior Female Athlete of the Year.
Hosted by Sport BC, the 56th annual awards recognize the province’s top athletes for outstanding performance and achievement in sports.
In 2023, Mulugeta brought home two golds and one silver medal at the 2023 BC High School Track & Field Championships and set personal bests in all of his track and field disciplines.
Junior golfer Lauren Kim graduated in June 2023 and spent the summer competing at several prestigious golf tournaments, including the U.S. Women’s Open. She went on to win the Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship and began her post-secondary sports career with a scholarship to the University of Texas last fall.
“The Athlete of the Year Awards is a true celebration of sport in our province. We congratulate our finalists and the organizations they represent,” said Sport BC’s President and CEO, Rob Newman in a release.
The winners will be announced on March 7 at an awards dinner in Vancouver.
