It’s winter break, and what better way to relax and pass the time than to get in some fun reading over the holidays!

We’re kicking off our Winter Reading series with several recommendations from Hazelgrove Elementary teacher-librarian Jennifer McLean for kindergarten to Grade 3-level readers! Here’s what’s on her list for younger students this winter break:

Bathe the Cat by Alice B. McGinty and David Roberts

Grandma is coming to visit, so we need to clean this house – fast! So many chores to be done, and who will bathe the cat? A cheeky pet cat turns a list of household tasks into mixed-up chaos in this hilarious rhyming tale of everyday family silliness.

How Does Santa Go Down the Chimney? By Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen

“How does Santa go down the chimney? No one knows, but here are some ideas...” This latest collaboration by fantastic author-illustrator duo Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen is a clever and funny exploration of the infinite ways that Santa delivers presents around the world. Sure to be an instant Christmas classic, kids and adults will love the vivid illustrations and making their own wild guesses as to how Santa gets into their house!

The Big Cheese by Jory John and Pete Oswald

The newest book in the popular Food Group series features the Big Cheese, who is the best at everything and loves to let everyone else know it. But when someone new proves to be major competition in the Cheese-cathlon, will the Big Cheese realize that winning (and bragging about it) isn’t everything? A perfect combination of life lessons and laughs!

Sometimes I Feel Like a River by Danielle Daniel and Josee Bisaillon

12 short poems feature our important connection to various natural wonders of the land on which we all learn, work and play. This follow-up to Daniel’s Sometimes I Feel Like a Fox will inspire readers to get outside and immerse themselves in the simple beauty of nature. Included is a guide to taking a mindful walk or roll to truly absorb the sights and sounds in our own backyards!

There are lots of great books to choose from for primary readers this holiday season! Stay tuned for recommendations for intermediate and secondary students in our Winter Reading series!
