Semiahmoo Secondary wins historic provincial senior boys basketball championship in an all-Surrey final
The Semiahmoo Secondary Thunderbirds and the Fleetwood Park Dragons made history this weekend in all Surrey final for the 4A Senior Boys basketball provincial championships. Semiahmoo defeated Fleetwood 71-40 at the Langley Events Centre Saturday evening.
This championship match marked the first time two teams from the Surrey School District faced off in the 4A division finals, which is the top division for senior boys basketball in B.C.
This was such an exciting game,” said Laurie Larsen, chair of the Surrey Board of Education. “The caliber of students and coaches in our district is second to none. On behalf of the board, I want to thank all our students, coaches and volunteers that participated in this tournament. And congratulations to Semiahmoo for winning the gold, and to Fleetwood for winning the silver.”
The Thunderbirds entered the provincial tournament as the #1 ranked team while the Dragons entered as the #6 ranked, later defeating the #3 and #2 ranked teams to meet Semiahmoo in the finals.
Semiahmoo was no stranger to championship matches either, having made it to last year’s final match only to lose out to Burnaby South. Avenging that loss, Semiahmoo’s championship win marks the school’s first time winning the coveted senior boys basketball title in the tournament’s 77-year history.
In addition to the championship win, Surrey Schools also received the following recognitions:
- Torian Lee (Semiahmoo): Most Valuable Player
- Andre Juco (Semiahmoo): Best Defensive Player, Second Team All-Stars
- Cole Bekkering (Semiahmoo): Quinn Keast player of the Final Game, First Team All-Stars
- Aaron Uppal (Fleetwood): First Team All-Stars
- Adam Olsen (Elgin Park): First Team All-Stars
- Marcus Flores (Semiahmoo): Second Team All-Stars
- Izaec Oppal (Fleetwood): Second Team All-Stars
- Les Brown (Semiahmoo): Roger Morrow Coaching Award
- Nick Day (Fleetwood): Ken Wright Coaching Award
Congratulations to everyone involved!
