Adams Road Unstoppables take Surrey reading crown

The Adams Road Unstoppables have lived up to their name and come out on top of this year’s Surrey Reading Link Challenge, overcoming 46 other Surrey schools to take first place in the annual reading competition.

The win marks several firsts for Adams Road Elementary in the competition; not only is it the school’s first time winning in Surrey, but it was also the first time the school had ever participated in the regional reading challenge.

“This was the first year that Adams Road joined Reading Link, so it is exciting that they did so well,” said teacher-librarian Michelle Donaldson. Adams%20Road%20Unstoppables-1.jpgThe 2022 Surrey Reading Link Champions, the Adams Road Unstoppables.

The Unstoppables, made up of students Suhaela, Mayra, Charu, Harveen and Brady, derived its team name from one of the six novels selected for this year’s challenge, which tests teams on knowledge and retention.

“Each level of challenge has three rounds of questions and each round has 12 questions, sort of like Jeopardy,” explained Donaldson. “The team has to work together to decide on the best answer to submit.”

The challenge is broken up into brackets, with teams within schools first competing against one another, then those top teams moving on to compete against others within their immediate area before advancing to face the best teams from across the district.

“[The Unstoppables] won first place at each of these challenges,” said Donaldson.

The Adams Road team then went on to the Grand Challenge to face the top teams from 12 other districts in the Fraser Valley on May 4, and while they did not place in the top three, Donaldson said they’re already looking forward to next year’s challenge.

“Our school community is very proud of them and this series of winning streaks has certainly got a lot of other students interested in joining Reading Link in the future,” she said.

The books for this year’s challenge were Book Uncle and Me by Uma Krishnaswami, The Case of the Missing Auntie by Michael Hutchinson, Inkling by Kenneth Oppel, The Magic Misfits by Neil Patrick Harris, The Unteachables by Gordon Korman and A Wolf Called Wander by Rosanne Parry.
