Humanities

1724339859026.jpegThe school subject of Humanities blends English 8 and Social Studies.  The term “humanities” comes from the Renaissance term “humanism,” which is the study of human thought, foundational ideas, expressions of culture, and social organization.  In this course, we learn writing skills, develop strategies to help with reading comprehension, practice spoken communication, and learn how to understand and create visual texts.  We also cover the geography, history, politics, economics, and art of the period from 600 to 1750 CE.

Humanities 8 runs through both semesters, and students will work with the same teacher and class for the entire school year.  One of the goals of the Humanities program is to support each student through his, her or their transition into secondary school.  We act as an unofficial homeroom and facilitate a caring, safe space for students in their first year at LTSS.  Strong family-school communication is an asset to this transition process, so please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions!

1724339960514.pngHumanities 8 is also the basis of the Humanities House Cup, a competition between all Humanities classes to earn points through socially responsible behaviour and leadership, as well as in monthly competitions organized by Senior Leadership, our school’s Activities Director, and the Humanities Department.  Students are awarded Panther Points cards, which they submit each month; the points are added to their class team’s totals, and Senior Leadership does a draw every month for a $25 gift card.  This helps engage our newest students in the school community, encouraging them to make a difference.
