Principal's Message April 21-25th

Good morning and Happy Thursday Panthers!

I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend and returned to school on Tuesday morning feeling rejuvenated and ready for new challenges and new learning!  It is a beautiful Spring morning… and we are all so fortunate to be Panthers and to be able to learn together at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary.

Tuesday was Earth Day and our Environment Club was organizing another Greenaway Park invasive species clean-up!  Great thanks to all students and staff who have taken on this community initiative.   You are making a difference!

April has also been Earth Month at our library.  Drop in and check out the books and resources on display.

On Tuesday, our school practiced our Fire Drill procedures.  The weather cooperated and we all appreciated a few minutes of sunshine as the school evacuated to our grass field.  We also included a First Aid response simulation as part of this week’s drill.   The school building evacuated quickly and our students and staff were tracked carefully.  Thank you to all Panthers for your serious participation.

Also on Tuesday, our Staff Committee had an opportunity to meet.  Discussion included washroom access, Parent-Teacher Interview formats and Extended Day Bell schedule models.  All important conversations.  Thank you to participating staff for your feedback as we consider systems for next school year.

Wednesday was Administrative Professionals Day.  This gave us a chance to recognize and thank our amazing office team!  We are so grateful for the support and leadership that Andrea, Dee, Teri, Brenda, Lauren, Alicia and Shaz provide our school community.   We appreciate all you do!  Thank you.  😊

This week our Black Student Union has been selling home-made bracelets to raise awareness and raise funds.   I am constantly reminded of the importance of student leadership across a school community and the wonderful spirit and skills that our students possess.  Thank you for your leadership and your support of our school.

On Thursday, I enjoyed a visit to Mr. Rai’s Humanities 8 class.  Students have been learning through First Peoples Principles of Learning with a focus on the value of memory, history and story and the exploration of identity.  These principles directly support their Humanities 8 Curricular Competencies.   Our updated Student Learning Plan will focus on this instructional approach and the learning that has occurred.   Great thanks to Mr. Rai and his block C Humanities class for your engagement and reflection!

The important work of this year’s 2025 Dry Grad committee continues!  We again are looking forward to a wonderful Dry Grad with a safe, fun and supervised celebration at the Central City Fun Park after the Dinner Dance.   Students are reminded that May 9th is the deadline to purchase your ticket.  Don’t miss out on this final opportunity to come together with friends, as a graduating class, and celebrate your graduation.  Also, students and parents are reminded that the Dry Grad Committee will be having a Bottle Drive fundraiser this Sunday at the school.   A 50/50 Raffle fundraiser is also underway.  Thank you to all students and families for supporting this year’s Graduating class!

Traffic and Student Parking

All Panthers are reminded that traffic around the school and parking on school property will be very busy with our increased enrollment and Extended Day schedule.  All student drivers are reminded that it is very important to drive with care and attention while on or near school property.  Safety is our first priority.  Please drive safely and responsibly, be aware of pedestrians, and follow all traffic regulations.

If possible, all families are asked to consider alternative transportation options.  Please walk or bike to school if possible.  It would also be helpful if students are dropped off a couple of blocks away from the school and vehicles do not enter our school’s parking lot.

Please note that this year, students are only permitted to park in the Student Lot on the right side of our parking lot near our Portable classrooms.  Students are not permitted to park in the Staff Lot.

All students wishing to park on school property must apply for a Parking pass.  Application forms may be picked up at the office.  Students must park in their designated stall.

Parking passes must be displayed on your car’s windshield at all times while on school property.  Parking privileges will be revoked for any students not following our parking regulations or for unsafe driving.

Thank you for your help and cooperation in responding to our increased traffic challenges and protecting the safety of our community members.
