Employee Wellness Survey

Since 2020, the Research and Evaluation Department has collaborated with multiple departments and employee group representatives to develop and administer annual employee wellness surveys. The first Employee Wellness Survey in the district was developed and administered in March 2020 by several district leaders across multiple departments, as well as representative leaders of different district employee groups (CUPE, STA, SPVPA, and EPEG).

In June 2020, additional staff were included to form an Employee Wellness Initiative Working Group to strengthen the survey and data collection processes. In February 2021, a similar survey was administered as part of a check-in on employee wellness. The Working Group reported on supports that have been helpful, challenges faced, and needs of employees moving forward.

Building from this knowledge and seeking to work within a systems approach to assessing and addressing employee wellness through cross-departmental collaborations, the Working Group began to co-create an action plan in November of 2021. The action plan outlined the roles, activities, deliverables, and timelines for deliverables from the Working Group. From there, an exhaustive literature review was undertaken to identify relevant employee wellness instruments for the purposes of selecting wellness scales that were adapted or helped to inspire the Working Group to create items for inclusion in a new employee wellness survey and subsequent focus groups.

The primary deliverable from the Working Group’s action plan was the development of the Employee Wellness Survey, which was piloted in October 2022 and then administered later that year in December. An assessment of the psychometric properties was undertaken, revealing the wellness instrument to be a highly valid data collection instrument with have high internal consistency and reliability. After the administration of the survey to all employees, an internal report was developed for the Employee Wellness Consultative Committee, which was formed by the Human Resources Department in June of 2022. The report included survey data that was spatially mapped across the boundary areas of 22 family of schools.
