Student-selected Surrey Book Award winners provide great summer reads
Surrey Schools has revealed the 2024 Surrey Book Award winners, providing students and parents with a wonderful list of student-approved recommended reads for the summer break.
Each year students from across the district vote on their favourite books from a list of titles nominated by a committee of district teacher-librarians.
The books are split across five categories: Book of the Year, Picture Book of the Year, Narrative Non-Fiction Book of the Year, Surrey Teens Read, and the Livre de L'Annee (French book of the year).
The winners for 2024 are:
Book of the Year: New Dragon City by Mari Mancusi – A dystopian fantasy novel following a group of survivors in a world where dragons awoke and decimated civilization as we know it.
Picture Book of the Year: Knight Owl by Christopher Denis – An adorable story about a young owl fulfilling a lifelong dream of becoming a knight and proving that size doesn’t matter.
Narrative Non-fiction Book of the Year: Pizza: A Slice of History by Greg Pizzoli – A colourfully illustrated book exploring the history of one of the most beloved foods in the world.
Surrey Teens Read: Dark Room Etiquette by Robin Roe – A psychological thriller for young adults, Dark Room Etiquette follows 16-year-old Sayers Wayte who leads a life of privilege, until he’s kidnapped and told the life he’s living is based on a lie.
Livre de L'Annee: La corde à linge by Orbie – A charming story about a young boy who gets stuck while attempting to traverse a clothesline to get to a nearby candy store.
For even more summer reading fun, check out the summer reading clubs available at Surrey Libraries and the White Rock branch of the Fraser Valley Regional Library. The annual clubs encourage students to keep reading through the summer months by offering prizes and medals for various reading achievements.
