Welcome to the Career Education site for the City Central Learning Centre.

This site can be accessed by students, parents and staff for information regarding Youth Train in Trades [Partnership Programs], Youth Work in Trades [Apprenticeships], Work Experiences, and Career Education Specialty Programs.

District Partnership Programs [Youth Train in Trades]:

There are approximately 20 various District Partnership [Youth Train in Trades] programs.  The Surrey School District offers these options for students interested in gaining industry training.  These provide an opportunity for students to earn both high school and post-secondary credits before high school graduation.  The Surrey School District pays the cost of tuition for these programs.  For a list of specific programs, click the 'Useful Links' titled "District Career Education Link."

Apprenticeship Programs [Youth Work in Trades]:

The Youth Work in Trades program offers students the opportunity to begin an apprenticeship while completing high school graduation requirements.  It is a partnership with School District #36, the community, employers, Ministry of Education and the Industry Training Authority.  Students may earn wages and up to 16 course credits by enrolling as a Youth Work in Trades student.  There is a possible $1,000 award for qualifying students.  Go to the website www.itabc.ca for more information.

Work Experiences:

Students can participate in Work Experience 12A or 12B and earn four - eight credits.  See the Career Facilitator to discuss course requirements and possible placements.  In addition, students can apply to various Skills Links or Employment programs, outside the school environment.  Upon successful completion, these programs may lead to earning 4 credits towards graduation [students MUST meet with Career Facilitator in advance to discuss this educational option].

Specialty Opportunities:

Students may develop attitudes, skills and awareness that will assist a successful transition beyond secondary school.  Students will gain knowledge through practical experiences and lessons in goal setting, informed decision making, accessing and analyzing information and personal responsibility.  Surrey Schools and the City of Surrey have a Mentorship Program, which is offered in the Fall and Spring to successful applicants [4 course credits].  In addition, we offer several certificates to boost a resume for students, which are at NO COST to the participants.  These certificates include FoodSafe, Counter Balanced Forklift, Powered Pallet Forklift, Narrow Aisle Forklift, Emergency Level First Aid, and Traffic Control Person [two-day training].  Spaces in all these specialty opportunities are limited, so inquire early in the school year.
