Future Projects: Pending Approval

Once a year, the Board adopts our Five-Year Capital Plan we create as an ongoing document of high priority projects and planning. There may be subtle differences between the annual Capital Plan and the future Capital Projects / Projects Pending Approval as a result of emergent needs and rapid growth.

Working with the Ministry of Education and Childcare, the submitted projects are reviewed and carefully considered to remedy the need for urgent expansions and seismic mitigation. When a project receives funding approval from the Ministry of Education, it is added to our Current Projects page and Progress Chart.

Project Types

New Capital Projects are first identified in the School District's annual Capital Plan submission to the Ministry of Education and Childcare as follows:

expansions - to add new enrolling space
replacements - to replace old and unsafe buildings
seismic mitigations - for seismically upgrading existing H3 buildings

Part of the Capital Plan submission to the Ministry of Education and Childcare includes a fact sheet outlining a very high level rationale for the projects, including proposed project schedules and budget. After the Ministry reviews the fact sheet they can approve or support partial funding for the District to prepare further detailed Project Definition Reports (PDR).

Open Houses

Typically, plans for new schools are presented to the public in an open house format. This is an opportunity for the community to ask questions and make comments on the future design of the new school. Valuable feedback from parents and the community is gathered to inform the district planning and construction staff about design considerations. Open houses can involve the architects, district staff and city staff, in order to help field any questions from the public.

Project Approval: Capital Project Funding Agreement (CPFA)

Once the province's Treasury Board approves the submitted PDR, a Capital Plan Funding Agreement (CPFA) is issued. This is the formal funding agreement between the Ministry and a school district. At this point the project can move into the design and construction stages.
