SAIL Secondary
STEAM and STEAMX academy students who attend in-person classes at SAIL. SAIL’s STEAM and STEAMX programs begin in September and end in June. In STEAM and STEAMX, students embrace the innovator mindset and develop their capacity through inquiry, experimentation and project-based learning. They learn in an open, collaborative, contemporary space that fosters engagement. In STEAM, students build upon their core and curricular competencies as well as their inter and intra-personal skills. Students are encouraged to practice two-eyed seeing when researching. Albert Marshall is a respected Mi’kmaq Elder whose concept of two-eyed seeing (2004) recognizes the strength of Indigenous ways of knowing and the strength of western ways of knowing and uses both competencies together. In Marshall's words:
Two-Eyed Seeing refers to learning to see from one eye with the strengths of Indigenous ways of knowing and from the other eye with the strengths of Western ways of knowing and to using both of these eyes together.
The SAIL Academy's STEAM program is a 3 Year program Grades 8-10 program. It combines 4 days of face-to-face interdisciplinary instruction with one day of flexible, independent learning. Our STEAM blended program explores science, technology, engineering and math through the lens of arts and design.
The SAIL Academy STEAMX program is a 2 Year Accelerated program for highly motivated, academic students. The program combines 4 days of face-to-face interdisciplinary instruction with one day of flexible, independent learning.
The STEAMX program allows students to accelerate through Grades 8-10 and pursue some Grade 11 & 12 courses according to their abilities. In this way, they are prepared for the rigor of IB or AP level senior high courses.
