For one night only, Surrey Schools is going virtual in its final artificial intelligence event of the 2025-26 school year, providing a free online platform for students, parents, educators and administrators across Canada to engage with an expert on what matters most with AI in education.

mark-pearmain-dr-shimi-kang.6e64ef203449.pngSupt. Mark Pearmain and Dr. Shimi Kang are leading the conversation in Surrey Schools' first-ever virtual AI event, taking place June 11 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. PT.

On June 11 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. PT, Supt. Mark Pearmain will host Junk, Toxic & Healthy AI: Helping Families Understand the Difference, an evening of AI exploration that will teach families how to:

  • safely adopt AI and harness its technological innovation;
  • ensure online safety and privacy with various AI platforms; and
  • use AI ethically and responsibly.

Mark will delve into each topic with Harvard-trained psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr. Shimi Kang to give parents a better understanding of how AI is impacting education and the effects of AI on social and emotional well-being. They will also share tools and resources to help parents have important conversations with their children around AI and better equip them to navigate the ever-changing online world.

To date, through the Surrey Schools AI series, Surrey Schools has hosted two in-person parent evenings, engaged in one-on-one sit-downs with experts, participated in AI summits across the country and amplified student voices via the district’s student AI council, with whom Mark is meeting later next month. The district also has a growing library of AI resources for students, parents and educators at surreyschoolsone.ca/ai

In addition to an expert interview with Dr. Kang, the evening will feature a live Q&A, offering an easy-to-use online format for families to share their questions and concerns in real time and receive practical, evidence-based solutions.
