Principal's Message October 21-25th

This Week at Lord Tweedsmuir

Thursday October 24th, 2024

Good morning Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary.

We returned to school on Monday after an atmospheric river of rain over the weekend.  Fortunately, all was well at the school, the weather settled, and our busy and supportive school community continued to move forward.  It has been a productive week of learning and friendship and our students and staff are highly engaged in their courses.  As we have now firmly settled into the routines of the semester, now is a very important time of learning.  I highly encourage all students to work to the very best of your abilities, seek support and participate in the many extracurricular opportunities that are available.  Our school is a very special place and our students are very fortunate!

Last week our Social Studies Department hosted the Provincial Student Vote Mock election.  All of our students got the chance to learn more about our Democratic process and experience the voting process.  Great thanks to our Social Studies Department for hosting this important learning opportunity.

It is Core Competency week.  Students are reflecting on their development of Thinking skills and Communication skills and their Personal and Social Responsibility.  Part of this process is to set goals for the year and describe their progress.  Parents/guardians will have access to your child’s Goal Setting and personal reflection summary.  It will be available through each student’s School District email account.

Monday was National Library Day and “Drop Everything and Read” Day at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary.  In the morning, all students and staff spent time together reading.   It was such a valuable opportunity to highlight the importance of literacy and encourage our students to read!   Thank you very much to our school librarians Mr. Sexton and Ms. Maion for your help in organizing this event.

We also held our Staff Committee meeting on Monday.   This provided us an opportunity to review this year’s Extended Bell schedule and discuss the various factors that were considered as we built the schedule.  Each Spring we will review the structure of the Bell schedule and plan for the next year.

On Tuesday evening, we hosted our Grade 8/9 Parent Information Evening.  We were able to share information about our new Provincial Assessment and Reporting procedures and discuss the various levels of support and systems in our school.   The presentation is now posted on our website for parents/guardians/students to review.

Halloween is next week and it will be a fun and busy time for our school.  Our Panther Players Drama Club is hosting their Haunted Movie Theatre afterschool starting today (Thursday).  Students are invited to join in on the Halloween fun!

I recently had the chance to drop by and visit our LTSS Chess Club.  The club has really grown in membership this year with all levels of play from beginner to advanced.  Drop by and check it out at lunchtime!

Students are reminded that our Intramural program is running at lunchtime.  Come down to the gym and watch or participate in the action!

Students, parents/guardians are reminded that Friday is a Professional Development Day across our school district.  Schools will not be in session.  I wish all staff a meaningful day of learning and collaboration.

All Panthers are also reminded that on Monday, October 28th, we will be running our “Flex Day Schedule” with an early dismissal of 1:27pm (Period 4) and 2:40pm (Period 5).

Have a great day tomorrow and enjoy your weekend.  See you on Monday!

Traffic and Student Parking

All Panthers are reminded that traffic around the school and parking on school property will be very busy with our increased enrollment and Extended Day schedule.  All student drivers are reminded that it is very important to drive with care and attention while on or near school property.  Safety is our first priority.  Please drive safely and responsibly, be aware of pedestrians, and follow all traffic regulations.

If possible, all families are asked to consider alternative transportation options.  Please walk or bike to school if possible.  It would also be helpful if students are dropped off a couple of blocks away from the school and vehicles do not enter our school’s parking lot.

Please note that this year, students are only permitted to park in the Student Lot on the right side of our parking lot near our Portable classrooms.  Students are not permitted to park in the Staff Lot.

All students wishing to park on school property must apply for a Parking pass.  Application forms may be picked up at the office.  Students must park in their designated stall.

Parking passes must be displayed on your car’s windshield at all times while on school property.  Parking privileges will be revoked for any students not following our parking regulations or for unsafe driving.

Thank you for your help and cooperation in responding to our increased traffic challenges and protecting the safety of our community members.
