Crossing guard callout: Surrey and White Rock elementary schools in need of crossing guards

Surrey Schools is looking for new crossing guards for select elementary schools in the district!

As Surrey’s population continues to increase, elementary schools located in high-traffic areas are seeking crossing guards to help students safely get to and from school. The district currently has 38 crossing guards at 37 schools.

“Safety is a top concern for us,” said Adam Jaffer, Assistant Secretary-Treasurer. “Traffic is quite heavy these days and there are lot of high-volume crossings.

“If the majority of the population lives on a side street adjacent to the school, it’s not as much of a concern, but if they have to cross a main road, then it’s more of an issue.”

Twelve elementary schools are currently on a waiting list for crossing guards, and that list is growing. The list changes every year as principals see a need for safer crossings near their schools.

The district works with the Frontiersmen of the Commonwealth to recruit crossing guards for schools. Suitable candidates become members of the Frontiersmen and are provided a uniform for crossing guard duties.

“We’re looking for more of the same type of individuals who we have right now,” said Jaffer. “Those are community members who are fun, enjoy what they do and have lots of personality.

“Consistent availability is important, so we’re looking for people who have the time to help schools in the mornings and afternoons.”
