Counselling

The Counselling Department endeavors to assist students, along with the other departments, to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to navigate, and positively contribute to our rapidly changing and diverse global community. In order to do that students need to develop facets of:
- Well-being
- Self-determination
- Self-regulation
The department offers: individual counselling, communication skill enhancement, relationship skill enhancement, anger management lessons, mediation, mindfulness tools, mental health resources, referrals to community agenices, grad plan development, post secondary planning, scholarship information/resources and career planning.
All learners at the NSLC have access to the following support workers in addition to their course teachers.

Inner City Student Support Worker
Substance Use Liaison
School Resource Officer
Safe School Liaison
The extra support provided by these workers may include:
- Liaise with other staff to identify vulnerable students and their needs
- Providing academic support in one-on-one and/or small group settings (in consultation with teachers)
- Working collaboratively with staff to provide social emotional support and strategies
- Working with students experiencing personal and/or mental health issues
- Assisting learners with setting short-term and long-term goals
- Assisting students with the development of strategies for constructive/positive life skills (money management, diet, hygiene, medical)
- Assisting students with developing independent problem-solving skills
- Making home visits to meet with students and/or parents when needed
- Transporting and connecting students to community agencies (MCFD, CYMH, Youth Hub, Quest)
- Orientation with new students entering the program
- Collaborating with staff on the development and implementation of individual Education Plans and Student Learning Plans
-Providing students with information on substances and their impacts on mental and physical health
