Air quality advisory for the region
UPDATE: The air quality advisory was lifted the evening of June 8.
The Metro Vancouver Regional District has issued an air quality advisory for the Lower Mainland, including the Surrey and White Rock areas, due to “high concentrations of fine particulate matter and ground-level ozone” that are expected to last until the weather changes.
The concentrations in the air are primarily due to smoke from wildfires burning near Harrison Lake.
Our school district is closely monitoring the situation to ensure that our schools continue to be safe environments for our staff and students.
Our schools will limit smoke exposure for staff and students by:
- Allowing students who are sensitive to the smoke to remain indoors during lunch/breaks;
- Closing exterior doors and windows and utilizing filtered ventilation systems;
- Postpone or reduce outdoor activities, particularly strenuous activities like PE and outdoor athletic activities;
- Closely monitor students with asthma or other breathing conditions;
- Postpone extra-curricular outdoor athletic events (soccer, cross-country) for the remainder of the week if the advisory is not lifted.
