Education Services School students win more than $43,000 in scholarships

Ten students from the district’s Education Services School are recipients of a total of $43,500 in scholarships this year, ranging from $1,000 to an astounding $28,000.
The Education Services School oversees numerous programs for students in need of additional support. Every year, the district and community partners offers scholarships to students in such programs as Lee School, TREES (Teen Recreation & Educational School), STEP (Surrey Transition & Education Program) and the Hub.
The largest scholarship went to Summer Cardinal, a single mother who exemplifies the life of a student who is raising a child on their own. Cardinal received the Anke & Claude Cante Scholarship, valued at $28,000, for her dedication to making a difference by pursuing a career as an occupational therapist, and for her determination to make a better life and future for her child.
Surrey Schools gave out eight District Authority Scholarships to students who participated in Career Education and work experience programs, with three students receiving additional scholarships.
Mabel Legge took home the Principal’s Award, given to the top all-around student in Education Services School, and a District Authority Scholarship for Community Service. Legge was recognized for her participation in the Canadian Conservation Corps, a program by the Canadian Wildlife Federation, and for her hard work throughout her time with the district.
River Martinson also received a District Authority Scholarship for Community Service, as well as the Citizenship Award, designated for students who have volunteered to assist with school programs or in their community. Martinson was highlighted for their positive attitude and motivation to become a youth care worker.
Tyler Howden received a District Authority Scholarship for Applied Design, Skills & Technologies, and one of two Fraser Valley Realtors Bursaries, alongside student Geovanni Benitez. Howden was acknowledged for overcoming physical health issues on his path to graduation and for his focus on helping others.
The other District Authority Scholarship recipients included Nora Lisette Al Hattab (for Fine Arts), Anam Anees (Applied Design, Skills & Technology), Phoenix Baynes (Technologies & Trades Training), Jexer Gomez (Technologies & Trades Training) and Zeva Ranger (Languages – Sign Language).
