Third annual district Pride Poster Contest sees amazing winning entries from across Surrey and White Rock
Sixteen elementary and secondary students from Surrey and White Rock are among this year’s winners of the third annual district Pride Poster Contest.
Once again students were encouraged to design posters based on LGBTQ2+ books, authors and characters that inspired them. Students submitted about 100 entries under this year’s theme of gender identity and expression.
“There were some really great entries and it’s so cool to see what the kids know and what is important to them, and that they feel confident to share that,” said Curtis. “When I talk to principals or other staff about the posters, they say it’s really powerful to see what’s going on for a marginalized group of students who feel like they need to be visible. It’s very powerful and that student voice is so important.”
Winning entries came from the following schools and grades:
Primary Winners:
- Grade 1, Surrey Centre Elementary
- Grade 3, Lena Shaw Elementary (two winners)
Intermediate Winners:
- Grade 4, Peace Arch Elementary (two winners)
