Get ready to ShakeOut Oct. 17th – Surrey students are on board!

Shakeout%202.jpgEach year Surrey Schools takes part in the annual Great B.C. ShakeOut drill – an opportunity to practice how to be safe during an earthquake. Knowing what to do during an earthquake could save your life!

At 10:17 a.m. on Oct. 17 Surrey staff and students will join millions of people worldwide and “Drop, Cover and Hold On.” Participants are also encouraged to review and update emergency preparedness plans and supplies, while taking proactive measures to secure their environment and prevent potential damage and injuries.

This year, the Surrey Schools ShakeOut event is proud to feature the participation of student graduates from the new Radio Frequency Communications course held this past summer.

Students from various Surrey schools who participated in course will be broadcasting messages via handheld HAM (amateur) radios to a central base station set up at the District Education Centre. The primary goal is to demonstrate the importance of HAM radios as a communication tool during a major emergency, particularly when traditional communication systems may fail or are disrupted.
